Living ‘In the Woods’ Has Its Hazzards

by on Jul.07, 2013, under July 2013

Shortly after waking up this morning we heard the unmistakable popping sound of large pieces of wood breaking.  Sure enough, within minutes a large oak tree in the green belt next to the house gave way and fell…..partially landing on three pines that are on our lot.  Two of the three are tall enough that if they give way they will hit the sunroom.  The third if it gives way will come down into the backyard.  Within fifteen minutes of the oak falling a pine gave way and crashed everything to the ground.  Thankfully, the pine that gave way is the one aimed into our backyard.  The sunroom is safe.  Crisis averted.  Now we have to find a way to clean up the mess after we dry out.  At this rate and with the prediction for rain all the way to next Saturday, that will be next weekend.

The pictures show it really isn’t that bad and in the grand stream of things it could have been a lot worse.  If the oak had fallen a just a foot or two to its left, then pines tall enough to take out our sunroom may have been in real jeopardy of falling.

We figure that with all the rain and the ground being so saturated, especially in the green belt, the oak shifted and fell. We know that there are a lot of trees down in the village and along the parkway having seen them ourselves this morning or from phone calls from neighbors discussing the issue.

Finally, if you are familiar with our backyard, the first picture shows the gaping hole where the oak and pine once were…..
